Patients benefit from ‘virtual’ emergency care
A group of emerging entrepreneurs have been highlighted as Broome’s next big innovators.
Andy Greig, duo Amy Andison and Tamara Graffen, and Broome Senior High School’s Year 10 work studies class were selected as the winners of the Broome Makers Competition on June 29.
The competition was launched last month as a key community and youth engagement initiative of the Broome Growth Plan.
It aims to develop the next wave of budding entrepreneurs by encouraging them to share innovative ideas on how to grow a new area of economic opportu-nity. More than 30 entries were received and judged by a panel featuring local business and industry leaders Saeed Amin, Jael Napper and Jack Kain.
Mr Greig, Ms Andison and Ms Graffen shared first place for their outstanding concepts.
Mr Grieg impressed judges with his idea to establish a cultural hub and pop-up gallery at the Broome Courthouse Markets with the aim of providing opportunities for local indigenous artists to share their art works, culture and knowledge with the broader community and visitors.
He also received the People’s Choice award. Ms Andison and Ms Graffen were recognised for their Hive Handmade Collective entry, which aims to provide local artisans a place to showcase their crafts.
Meanwhile, BSHS’s Year 10 class took out the Senior School award for their concept to sell merchandise at West Kimberley Football Association games.
Winners received seed fund-ing and enterprise mentoring skills.
Shire president Ron Johnston said the calibre of ideas for new enterprises was outstanding, with young entrepreneurs stealing the limelight and showing the energy and enthusiasm to get new businesses going.
