Police to stamp out crime

BEN JONESBroome Advertiser

Broome police have stepped up their presence in the Anne Street area in an attempt to stamp out antisocial behaviour and other crime.

Broome Police Station acting officer-incharge Senior Sergeant Alan Armstrong said increased foot and car patrols in the area had yielded good results with five arrests on the first night of the operation.

“The extra patrols will have a large deterrence factor as well as preventing offending in the area,” he said.

Sen. Sgt Armstrong said the operation had been in play before the recent incident in the area when a Broome officer was assaulted following a night of widespread antisocial behaviour.

He said police believed the operation would reduce antisocial offences.

“We believe there will also be a significant benefit to local taxi drivers who regularly have rocks thrown at their vehicles in the area,” he said.

“It’s going to be lasting for a number of weeks and if the level of offending decreases we’ll stop it for a while and sporadically target the area on a needs basis.”

Police will also be working with Horizon Power and Broome Shire to upgrade street lights with better street lighting being installed in the Anne, Tang, D’Antoine and Tolentino street areas.
