Prisoners join social soccer

Xavier DhalluinBroome Advertiser

After their recent victory against the Indonesian Navy, Broome's soccer players have taken on a new challenge in the form of prisoners from Broome Regional Prison.

Broome Soccer Association president Mike Doyle said it had always been an inclusive organisation and was happy to help out.

With the men's competitive season over, the prisoners have been heading to the BRAC ovals on a Wednesday night to join in some social soccer, scheduled to run for the next couple of months.

"All the games have been played in an excellent spirit," he said.

"It's interesting to play against a different sort of team, with players from different cultures.

"A few of the guys have some good skills."

While the men take a break, there is still some fierce rivalry among the women in what has been called the strongest women's competition BSA has hosted.

The Disco Ninjas defeated Avengers 2-1, while the Ninjas look like overall favourites to take out the flag.

Helena Edgar scored with a cracking header, one of the most outstanding goals ever scored in the competition to date.

In the other match, Chillis defeated Sharks by 3-1.

Monica Sullival continued her scintillating form this season to lead her team to victory.

The season runs until October 23, a cup competition runs over the school holidays.
