Project may bolster eco-tourism
A long-awaited project for the Broome Turf Club, to sublease part of its land for a wilderness retreat, was given the green light at last week’s Broome shire council meeting.
The proposal by the Royal Automobile Club of WA includes a nature-based eco and familyfriendly wilderness retreat adjacent to the race track at Gantheaume Point, comprising 50 eco-tents and 30 camp sites.
Conditions included sealing of the turf club’s car park.
Ron Johnston of the Broome Turf Club addressed the councillors, saying the project provided a unique tourism offering for Broome.
“The RAC has more than 720,000 members, and would be a great boost to Broome’s tourism if we can capitalise on it,”
Mr Johnston said.
Councillors noted the project would also mean an ablutions block and kiosk available at Gantheaume Point.
They said if all clearances were secured, it could be a great opportunity to foster eco-tourism within the town.
