The works of two prolific Broome photographers have been selected from a pool of 7000 images as winners of the 2012 People and Planet International Photo Competition.

The images No Gas by Ingetje Tadros and Community United by Damian Kelly made a list of 53 winners of the competition, and will be published in the 2013 People and Planet Social Justice and Environment Diary.

Ms Tadros’s No Gas, depicting Rowena Puertollano from Broome, was taken during a protest against the proposed gas hub at James Price Point.

“An Aboriginal woman standing up for herself and her country,” Ms Tadros said.

“This to me it is a powerful shot.

(I took) all beautiful colours away so she stood out more strongly.

“It’s a strong emotion in there, to look at the image, but also when I took the image,” Ms Tadros said.

Damian Kelly’s Community United, also taken during protests against the proposed gas hub at James Price point, featured Neil Mckenzie, Albert Wiggan and Joseph Roe.

“This photo documents a significant day in Broome’s history,” Mr Kelly said.

He calls it “the worst day since the bombing of Broome” in World War II.

“I’ve titled this photo Community United as the State’s attempt to divide the community has not worked; in fact it has brought many parts of the community together.

“Black Tuesday is a day that the community will never forget.”

The People and Planet Photo competition received 7000 images, submitted by photographers from 80 countries.

The diary, to be published in Australia in September, is helping to support the work of almost 50 Australian charities working to promote social justice and environmental sustainability.
