Pugilists prepare for PCYC fight night

Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

This Saturday is fight night in Broome, with PCYC hosting the North West Boxing Championships.

In partnership with Boxing WA, four Broome fighters will be in action, along with opponents from Newman, Karratha, Wickham, Port Hedland and Kununurra.

Jayde Ralph, Ashley Spowart and Adam Selby will take on opponents in the male competition, with Samantha Baird competing in the female bout.

It is a chance for the fighters to become the north west champion in their respective weight divisions. A capacity crowd is expected for the event.

PCYC centre manager Emma-Kate Gooch said it should be a blockbuster evening of action.

“It is very expensive for fighters in the north west to travel to Perth for fights, and as such the respective regional boxing clubs have worked together to organise the event,” she said.

“The fights will take place in an outdoor setting, and as such I’d like to thank all the volunteers that helped to set up the ring.

“We are also grateful to Boxing WA for sending up an accredited referee, and for their support.”

The Broome athletes have been training rigorously in the build-up to the event, and are currently on the lookout for a new coach or trainer.

Entry to the event costs $30, while under-16s are able to attend for free.
