Racing Guantanamo kick clear of the pack

Racing Guantanamo opened up a five-point gap at the top of the Broome soccer men’s competition with a win last Wednesday, while Meatworks also kick-started their campaign with a victory.

Guantanamo dominated their clash with NDFC Barbarians and ended up 5-0 victors after a second-half landslide.

The breakthrough came on the stroke of half-time, with defensive midfielder Paulo Missina breaking forward to slot an effort home.

Guantanamo’s second-half performance proved they are the team to beat, with a Keith Anderson brace and strikes from Tremayne Tisulu and Frank Britton sealing victory.

In the early kick-off, Meatworks got back to winning ways with a comprehensive 8-2 victory over Broome City.

City beat Meatworks 2-0 in the first meeting of the sides earlier in the season. However, the result was never in doubt here.

Sandy White dominated the midfield battle for Meatworks, and as a result his side found themselves 5-0 up at half-time.

City came into contention in the second half, with Matt McGuire getting two goals back for his side. However, a speculative Francis Johnston effort ensured victory for Meatworks.

Guantanamo now top the table with 12 points from five games, with a rejuvenated Meatworks moving into second on seven points. Broome City have six points, while Barbarians are bottom on four points.

In the women’s competition, Redskins and Disco Ninjas were victorious in two entertaining games.

Redskins came up against Sharks, with the former being too strong for their opponents. Jess Richards bagged a brace for the victors, while Monica Sullivan stood out for the winning team.

Disco Ninjas overcame a challenge from The Avengers to win 3-1, with Karen Salkilld and

Kylie Smith getting on the scoresheet.

Sinead Snow got a consolation for The Avengers, while Natalie Johns and Ella Mawdsley were standout performers.
