Residents get roped into ripper rodeo

Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

Rodeo returned to Broome after a seven-year absence last Friday night, with 2500 people watching in delight as brave competitors put on quite a show.

Rod Hartvigsen from Murranji Photography captured wonderful photos, as the crowd gasped and cheered at the spectacle.

Seven events were held, starting with the children’s Poddy Ride, all the way up to the eye-catching Bull Ride.

Renaldo Swan won the Poddy Ride, with Max Potter and Lochee Forshaw taking second and third.

Lyle Carter was declared champion in the Bareback category, with Kadin Bauer in second.

Linda Evans was victorious in the fast-paced Ladies’ Barrel Race, with Wave Camp also excelling. Kazendean Rivers and Quinton Kammann took first and second in the Novice Steer Ride.

Daral Dahl proved his strength by winning the Steer Wrestling event, while Michael Stanley and David Peskett were runners-up.

Stanley made amends by winning the Saddle Bronc, while Eddie Shadforth took second before winning the Bull Ride event. Marcus Gordon and Gary Barnes were other riders of note.

Broome Rodeo Club president Todd Walsh said the night’s action was a real success.

“We had hoped for a fantastic turnout, but we were blown away with the amount of people that attended,” he said.

“The crowd behaved really well, and we are happy with how the night went. I would like to say a big thank you to the community for getting behind the event.”

Mr Walsh said the club was looking at elevated seating options for future events, and that the rodeo would return to Broome again next year.
