Resurfaced and ready for race day

The Broome Turf Club is saddling up for a busy 2013, with more than $200,000 spent on the track in time for the season starting on June 1.

The club received a grant of $118,670 from the State Government earlier in the year, as part of the Racecourse Infrastructure Grants Program.

It has been used to resurface the main track and create a new 1450m starting chute, to allow for longer races.

Track manager Alan Dunkley has overseen the completed work, with the camber of the track increased to 4 per cent.

Broome Turf Club manager Doug Milner said the work on the track was needed, and it will allow for an exciting race season.

“The track had not been resurfaced in around five years, so it was overdue,” he said.

“Alan has done a fantastic job, as a lot of work was needed.

“The total cost of the upgrade has exceeded $200,000. The final preparations are being made ahead of the first race, and we are looking forward to another great racing season.”

The race season is a major drawcard in Broome, and is eagerly anticipated by tourists and locals alike.

The first race of the new season will take place on Saturday, June 1, with nine meets in total for this year.

The season will be wrapped up with the Broome Cup which takes place on Saturday, August 17.
