Roebuck Bay undefeated in 35-over competition

Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

The third round of the Broome Cricket Association's 35-over competition saw Roebuck Bay Cricket Club maintain their unbeaten record, with Wanderers also claiming victory last Sunday.

Roebuck Bay's bowling proved the difference against Mangrove Cricket Club, making their opponents pay after they opted to bat first. The victors claimed two wickets in the first over, one off the first ball, to put Mangrove under early pressure.

Bowling in partnerships, Roebuck Bay continued to take wickets from both ends, with Mangrove at one stage toiling on 5-11. Mangrove struggled to gain any momentum and if it was not for Dean Holder's 22 runs, the total would have been embarrassing.

After 20 overs, Mangrove were bowled out for 77 runs. Jarrod Withers and James Carpenter claimed three wickets apiece.

Roebuck Bay were cautious not to give away cheap wickets in their run chase and were methodical in achieving their target by the 27th over, losing only two batsmen. They finished the day on 4-128. Captain Steven Thompson top-scored with 43 runs and was well backed-up by opening partner Joel Unicomb's 38.

The Dirty Dozen wore pink for the first time in the history of Broome cricket in their match against Wanderers to support the McGrath Foundation, raising $1000.

Wanderers batted first with opener Ben Rahman top scoring on 36 and Justin Oades making 34. Tim Bycroft claimed both wickets.

It was a very fast-paced innings with runs scored relatively easily, even though wickets fell at regular intervals. Wanderers were bowled out for 178, with Bycroft taking four wickets and Justin Crowley claiming three.

Some very tight bowling from Rohnan Maher made it difficult in the Dozen's run chase, who struggled to strike up partnerships.

The most resistance came from debutant Ben Sarsfield, who top-scored with 37 not out while Ryan Blackburn was also undefeated on 21, with the Dozen finishing 5-131.
