Simmons inspires netballers

Representatives from Netball WA and West Coast Fever player Verity Simmons travelled to the West Kimberley last week as part of a Department of Sport and Recreation funded initiative.

The group spent time in Broome, Derby and Bidyadanga, hosting school clinics for young netball enthusiasts aged 5-17, and workshops with coaches, umpires and players.

West Kimberley youngsters took the opportunity to get Simmons’ autograph or a photo with the 22-year-old centre.

Simmons said that she hoped to provide inspiration to the netball stars of tomorrow.

“I am from a small country town in New South Wales, so travelling to Kimberley communities feels similar to home. I stress to the youngsters that whatever options you get given, take it and run with it — netball can open doors,” she said.

Netball WA’s general manager of community netball Liz Booth said the trip was thoroughly worthwhile.

“Our aim is to help associations in the netball community to improve, with skills passed onto youngsters, umpires and coaches alike,” she said.

“There are lots of kids with terrific natural talent in the North West, and we have been impressed with the fantastic participation numbers and great facilities.”

Broome Netball Association development officer Tash Aristei said having the Perth-based representatives in the Kimberley was very beneficial.
