Skate competition opens Youth Week celebrations

The Kimberley’s young leaders were celebrated at the regional launch of National Youth Week in Broome last Friday.

The event, which runs from April 8-17, celebrates the contributions young people make to the community.

WA Youth Minister Tony Simpson visited Broome to launch the event.

Activities started with the Sunset Skate competition at the skate park on Friday night.

The Kimberley Regional Group launched the Kimberley Regional Youth Strategy during a breakfast event at Town Beach on Saturday.

In the afternoon, young people met with community and Government leaders during a networking event at the Broome Civic Centre.

Later that day, Mr Simpson officially launched National Youth Week during a community event at Cable Beach.

Special guests included Japanese Ambassador Sumio Kusaka and wife Ikuko Kusaka, Yuichi Taktsuka, from and deputy consul-general Ida Toshio.

Other guests were National Youth Week WA ambassador Georgie Carey, WA Young Person of the Year Preston Culbong, Department of Local Government and Communities director general Jennifer Mathews, and representatives from local governments across the Kimberley.

Youth Week celebrations continued this week, with local organisations hosting youth-based events including health and physical activities, outdoor movies and crafts, murals and public art.

The program will conclude with the inaugural Broome Youth Week Awards at the Broome Convention Centre this Friday.
