Special Olympics Australia eye Broome for committee in near future

Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

Representatives of Special Olympics Australia visited Broome last week and now hope to have a local committee in place before the end of next month.

The Australia-wide organisation looks to drive sporting activities forward for physically and intellectually disabled people and has a solid presence in Perth and the Goldfields.

The visitors held a public forum last Thursday, with attendees discussing potential new programs for the local area. Last Friday a multi-sport Ribbon Day was held at BRAC, with 28 children from Roebuck Primary School, Cable Beach Primary School and St Mary’s College turning out for the day.

A re-enactment of the opening ceremony of the Olympics was held in collaboration with two Broome police officers, with the children carrying the Olympic torch into the sports stadium.

From there the children tried a host of different sports which were enjoyed by the attendees, according to Special Olympics Australia WA state manager Di Bruce.

“We are really encouraged with our trip up to Broome, and both events were well received,” she said. “We hope to have a local committee of passionate and enthusiastic people in place by the end of July, with activities hopefully starting in August.”
