Speedway celebrates season’s success

One of Broome’s most popular spectator sports — Broome Speedway — has celebrated another great season and congratulated its top performers.

Awards presented at its recent presentation night recognised drivers who have excelled in all divisions raced during the year.

The club was especially proud of junior drivers Finlay Mills, Callum Kemp and Blake Webb, who have each enjoyed an outstanding year for such young competitors — the youngest being 11.

The club has thanked outgoing president Mick Johnson and bar manager Carly McLaughlin for their great service to the committee.

There was a warm welcome for the new committee: president Mark Dunn, secretary Sam Brennan, treasurer/bar manager Sandy Harris and promotions officer Rob Harris. Mr Harris said the club’s highlights for the year included yet another successful running of the Shinju Stampede speedway event, which not only attracted huge crowds of locals and tourists but drivers from Karratha, throughout the State and Darwin.

The new season in 2013 is anticipated to start soon after the State Street Stock Titles are held in Port Hedland in May – an event which is keenly contested by Broome Speedway drivers and crews, Mr Harris said.
