Stabbing charge could change

Broome Advertiser

A charge against a 37-year-old woman from Balgo could be upgraded following a post-mortem on a 28-year-old woman stabbed in Broome last Thursday night.

The woman appeared in Broome Magistrate’s Court on Friday charged with grievous bodily harm after an argument with the victim escalated into a fight which resulted in the woman being stabbed to the left side of her chest.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Stirling Gardens Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, February 16.

Det. Sen-Sgt Brett Baddock said the victim had been disarmed of the knife before a struggle ensued.

“Sometime after that the accused person has picked up the knife and allegedly plunged it into the victim’s chest, causing a serious wound to her chest which later became fatal,” he said.

Police allege the argument took place when the victim approached a large group of people drinking in mangroves off Dampier Terrace in Broome.

Police and ambulance services had been alerted to the incident around 5.50pm.

Det. Sen-Sgt Brett Baddock said the victim, who was also from Balgo, was known to the accused but not related.

He said the post-mortem would be conducted some time this week and charges could be upgraded accordingly.

The victim was taken to Broome Hospital for emergency surgery but died a short time later.

He said Major Crime Squad and Broome Detectives were conducting further investigations.
