Standard of play improves as rounds ramp up
Round three of the Broome Soccer Association’s 11-a-side campaign threw up some exciting clashes, with the standard of play steadily improving as the campaign progresses.
In the early fixture, the BSA’s bitterest rivalry was resumed for 2015, with heavyweights Meatworks and Racing Guantanamo going head-to-head.
In the women’s clash both sides had won their first two games, but it was Guantanamo that ended up victorious with a comprehensive 4-0 victory.
Meatworks were missing some key players, with Racing attackers Maddie Chandler and Rosie Portbury taking advantage to fire their team into the lead early.
The defeated rearguard stood firm in the second half to limit the score, but RG are now top of the table with a perfect record.
The spoils were shared in the equivalent men’s clash, with the teams taking a point apiece in a 1-1 draw.
After an eagerly contested first half, an early second-half goal by Alex Irving gave Meatworks the lead after good work down the left by Wylie Scott.
However, Guantanamo showed that they were not ready to capitulate, fighting back with a long range effort from Dom Hill to level things up.
Racing will also be frustrated after forward Jacob Seong missed a penalty in an end-to-end affair.
In the late clashes, Broome City and Pearlers put on a five-goal thriller in the women’s fixture, with the former ending up on the right end of a 3-2 result.
In a game full of goal-scoring opportunities, City were the more clinical and picked up their first win of the campaign, leaving Pearlers rooted to the bottom of the table.
It was one-way traffic in the men’s clash, with Pearlers flexing their muscles to wallop City 8-1.
The score was 3-1 at the interval, but the men in white went up a gear in the second half to bolster their goal difference.
Sean Minouge filled his boots with four goals, with Pearlers showing that they will be one of this season’s contenders.
