Stars set the scene

A record crowd celebrated the 20th anniversary gala of Opera Under The Stars on Saturday evening, enjoying a varied feast of opera items – including the WA Opera Chorus, which performed regionally for the first time.

The chorus members, who showcased their talents as a chorus and as soloists, performed with Perth-born soprano soloist Rachelle Durkin, and were led by acclaimed conductor Brad Cohen.

Organisers estimated 1300 people poured into the Cable Beach amphitheatre for what has become Broome’s longest running arts event.

Director Mary-Attracta Connolly said the evening was a joyful celebration of the event’s two decades, and the feedback received had been “wonderful”.

“It was the most magnificent night of music making, not only artistically, but also from a technical and production point of view – it was a real teamwork achievement,” Ms Connolly said.

She heartily thanked “anyone and everyone” who was involved since the event’s inception.
