Students have their project broadcast

Broome Advertiser

Christmas Island District High School students who have been monitoring local coral bleaching will have their project broadcast to their peers around the State through a new online resource developed specifically to study marine ecosystems.

The State Government’s interactive education resource MarineWATERs was launched last year to provide information for teachers and students on sustainability and aquatic resources in WA.

Department of Fisheries community and education manager Michael Burke said the second phase of the project was now being rolled out with a range of new resources across all five modules for kindergarten to Year 10.

“In the new case study series we will look at specific issues, usually fishery related, in detail. The first case study to go live will detail a monitoring project of a recent coral bleaching event by students at Christmas Island District High School,” Mr Burke said.

The site contains an expanding suite of curriculum-based lesson plans, interactive activities, extension activities, student worksheets, fact sheets, and information on current and emerging issues.

“The (new) resources include 14 additional lesson plans, plus new PowerPoint presentations and two new supplementary packages,” Mr Burke said.
