A meeting to discuss a proposed marina for Broome was due to be held last Tuesday.

Department of Transport director-general Reece Waldock was set to chair the meeting, which was to include representatives from the WA Fishing Industry Council, the Charter Boat Association, Kimberley Marine Tourism Association, Australia’s North West Tourism, the Shire of Broome and Nyamba Buru Yawuru.

The assembly was scheduled to be held days after the Broome Marina Working Group hosted a presentation outlining its vision to establish a “world-class” marina to business representatives at a Broome Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event.

The presentation, attended by Transport Minister Dean Nalder, drew a big crowd of about 200 people.

BMWG chairman Martin Peirson-Jones said the big attendance at the event, combined with more than 2000 people on the Friends of Broome Marina Facebook page, had put the message across to Government that the community did support and want a marina.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s meeting, Mr Peirson-Jones said he hoped a steering group would form as a result of the gathering to progress the concept of a marina and start the site evaluation process, which would highlight previous concepts as well as proposals that have been put forward recently.
