Talent camp for squash players
SQUASH: A group of talented young squash players from Broome is taking part in an elite talent squad camp in Perth this week.
The sessions, on Thursday and Friday, in Belmont are for all junior squash players who have been selected by state coach Mike Cornish.
They will participate in on and off court training with coaches from Perth and regional areas.
These will include Level Two coaches, one of Squash Australia’s high-performance coaches, along with some specialised sports science coaches, who will evaluate and assess all participants.
On Saturday and Sunday, the youngsters will compete in the 2013 New Year’s Bash Junior Tournament. The program is aimed at junior players aged between 10 and 15.
This is the first time Broome players have attended the talent squad camp, but some junior players have attended tournaments in Perth on previous occasions.
Broome Squash Club has three talent squad teams consisting of about 18 members.
They all had the opportunity to attend and six enrolled in camp this year.
Broome Squash Club said hopefully, it would be sending more or all of its talent squad players to Perth. The program is completely funded by parents.
However, a Broome Squash Club spokeswoman said the event was valuable to aspiring youngsters.
“They have the opportunity to learn from the best coaches in WA and Australia, meet new friends with the same interests as them (hitting a little black ball),” the spokeswoman said.
