Team on brave ride to prevent suicide

BEN JONESBroome Advertiser

Suicide prevention and mental health are two of the biggest issues facing people in the Kimberley and six riders from Broome and Derby in this year’s Gibb River Road Mountain Bike Challenge are doing their bit to raise money for the cause.

The Alive and Kicking team are taking part in their second Gibb Challenge this year.

The team of health professionals hope to raise awareness of the issues surrounding suicide prevention and mental health during the ride, which this year is likely to include Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek.

Claiming more Australian lives each year than traffic accidents, suicide is a an issue which has touched many families in Broome and the Kimberley.

Half of the money raised by the team will go straight to Broome’s own grassroots prevention program Alive and Kicking Goals.

Team spokesman Adam Vincent said having a team of riders from health backgrounds gave them a great opportunity to tell people about the issues facing people in the Kimberley.

“As far is issues in the Kimberley go suicide prevention is right up there,” he said.

So far the team has raised more than $1500 towards its target of $3000.
