Teams look to record crucial victories

Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

Only three rounds of the regular Broome soccer campaign remain as the respective teams look to record crucial victories in the season run-in.

In round nine last Wednesday, Meatworks and Racing Guantanamo resumed their rivalry in the early fixtures of the men and women’s competitions.

It was a one-sided affair in the men’s clash, with reigning champions Meatworks prevailing 5-0.

The side in citrus yellow started well, with powerhouse striker Ray Meinsma rounding the goalkeeper to open the scoring before heading home a quick-fire second.

A calamitous own goal from Racing made it 3-0 at the break, while returning defensive stalwart Phil Naylor headed home his side’s fourth.

Meinsma smashed a penalty off the crossbar before making amends, and rounding off his hat-trick, to make it 5-0.

He was named man of the match for his display, while central midfielder Dan Rigg was also recognised by the referee for a standout performance, dominating his opposite number in the process.

Basement dwellers Guantanamo are clearly lacking leadership in their team, while Meatworks look destined for a head-to-head clash with Pearlers to become 2015 champions.

In the women’s clash Meatworks were top of the table but met their match in the form of a motivated Guantanamo, with the latter recording a commanding 6-1 win.

Maddie Chandler continued her season goal haul with a brace in victory, while Racing midfield lynchpin Rosie Portbury continues to impress with another standout performance.

In the late clashes, Pearlers and Broome City were pitted against each other.

Pearlers were handed an easy three points in the men’s fixture, with a forfeit win against an undermanned City.

In the women’s game the sides could not be separated, with an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Monica Edgar was named as the contest’s best player, scoring two goals for City, but strikes from Mandy Gatt and Laurie Achille ensured Pearlers shared the spoils.

In the men’s competition, Pearlers hold a five-point lead over Meatworks at the top, with Guantanamo rooted to the bottom with one solitary win from nine games.

In the women’s tournament, Guantanamo restored top spot with their latest win, with a two-point lead over Meatworks.
