Tourism poster targets frustrated commuters

Kimberley tourism bosses have seized upon the impending train chaos in Perth starting tomorrow with a billboard campaign promoting Broome.

A giant poster outside Fremantle Train Station boasts a classic sunset image with camels linedup on iconic Cable Beach with the words: “There’s no disruption to our trains”.

Australia’s North West Tourism launched its crusade last Friday with the hope of luring frustrated commuters to the Kimberley while essential works are carried out as part of the Perth City Link project.

The works are a key milestone in sinking the Perth railway and will allow Fremantle line trains to use the new tunnel after the first five-day interruption between tomorrow, July 12, and Wednesday, July 17.

The Public Transport Authority has pleaded with passengers to consider staggering their work start and finish times, take some flexi time, car pool, ride a bike — or “even take some leave during the shuts”.

The second five-day interruption is from Wednesday, July 31 to Sunday, August 4.

Australia’s North West Tourism chief executive Glen Chidlow said the works provided an ideal marketing opportunity.

“We are reminding fed-up people of the great escape — warm weather in a beautiful location and just a couple of hours from Perth,” he said.

“We boast a broad range of good quality accommodation and restaurants at affordable prices.”

Mr Chidlow said news of the planned disruption to the Perth- Fremantle railway line has been well publicised, particularly comments from the PTA that it would be an ideal time to take a holiday.

“I don’t think you need a reason to want to get away to Broome and escape the Perth winter, and the humdrum of the daily commute, but this might inspire some to consider a holiday in their own State,” he said.

The Mangrove Resort and Hotel and Resort in Broome praised the drive on its website just days after the poster launch.

“Love the new billboards by Australia’s North West,” the blurb read.
