Tournament wide open
The Broome Soccer Association men’s tournament played its third round at Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre last Wednesday, with the tournament wide open after two exciting games.
In the opening fixture Meatworks and NDFC Barbarians played out an end-to-end 4-4 draw, while 2012 champions Racing Guantanamo ended Broome City’s victorious streak, winning 5-1.
Barbarians were desperate for a positive result after losing their first two fixtures, and got off to the perfect start against Meatworks.
After the game went into the break at 1-0, Meatworks came out of the blocks quickly in the second half, and scored three quick-fire goals to take the ascendancy.
A powerful finish by young winger Dee Phensuk and a potential goal-of-the-season contender from Francis Johnston made it 3-1 to Meatworks.
Meatworks found themselves 4-2 up after the sides traded goals, however Barbarians showed fighting spirit to get back into the encounter.
With the game finely poised at 4-3, Barbarians threw everyone forward and got their reward when referee Tim Gray awarded a penalty following a handball on the Meatworks goal line.
Sharpshooter Matt Sheridan duly converted the spot kick, taking his personal tally for the season to seven, and ensuring a 4-4 draw.
In the second fixture Racing Guantanamo showed their calibre with a commanding 5-1 victory over Broome City.
With a number of important players returning, Guantanamo dominated possession, and showed why they are the team to beat.
Irish midfielder Niall O’Shea scored twice and picked up the best and fairest award, while Tremayne Tisulu, Colm O’Leary and Frank Britton also hit the back of the net. Matt McGuire got a consolation goal for City.
Guantanamo and City are locked at the top of the table after three games with six points apiece, with Meatworks in third with four points and Barbarians on one.
