Two green turtles came out of their shells after rehabilitation when they were released into the Indian Ocean at Broome.

Karra the turtle was brought to Kylie Sherwood at Chelonia Wildlife Rehabilitation and Release in Broome from Karratha about six weeks ago, suffering from floating disease which prevents turtles from diving for food and rest periods on the sea floor.

Fellow turtle Cat was found in waters near Broome three weeks ago suffering the same illness.

After some loving care and attention at Chelonia - the only wildlife rehabilitation resource between Perth and Darwin equipped with saltwater pools - the two turtles were ready to be released back into their natural habitat.

Karra was off in a flash, while Cat needed a little encouragement before heading into the waves.

Ms Sherwood said she always has mixed feelings on release days.

"I'm happy to see the turtles back where they belong" she said.

"But I do get used to having them around and miss them when they are gone."

Chelonia is run by Ms Sherwood on a voluntary basis, and operates with the support of benefactor-sponsors.
