Broome's first official ultimate frisbee league started up this week, with the fun and frenetic sport growing in popularity in town.

Social meetings at Solway Park every Sunday have brought disc chasers out in their droves and as such, longstanding local figures have decided to make the sport more structured locally.

The club became incorporated earlier this year and formed a committee at a recent annual meeting.

Last Tuesday interested participants met at Haynes Oval for the registration day, followed by a social game.

Two teams have been organised, which will play each other every Tuesday night, with the first round of fixtures taking place this week.

Teams consist of 11 players, and those taking part must be aged 15 old and older. Social sessions will still run on Sundays at Solway Park.

Broome Ultimate Frisbee Club treasurer Bec Lorraine said the sport's growth in popularity nationally was being felt in the Kimberley.

"The sport is getting bigger all over Australia," she said.

"We have decided to have a more formal set-up and play in regular teams, which will help with skill development."

New club president Jemma Arman said she was happy with how things were progressing.

"We're extremely pleased with the interest in the league so far," she said.

"We've had a great first week - lots of new players and nice, fast Frisbee."

Arman said Broome would look to send a team to Perth for the State titles in September.
