Wanderers win grand final

Neville BlackburnBroome Advertiser

The Wanderers Cricket Club have won the 2012 cricket premiership in a high standard and hard fought grand final against the Roebuck Bay Cricket Club at St Marys on Saturday.

The Wanderers timed their run to perfection, playing their best game of the season.

To their credit Roebuck were brave in defeat and after being on top of the premiership ladder for most of the season, a loss would have been a bitter pill to swallow.

Roebuck won the all-important toss and elected to bat. Opening batsman Joel Unicomb and Pat DeSouza then set out laying a solid foundation of 80 runs in 18 overs, with Unicomb the dominant partner in typically aggressive form.

Their innings then lost momentum losing four wickets for 20 odd runs before Justin Thompson led a mini revival lifting Roebuck to be all out for 166 in the 33rd over.

Unicomb top scored with 73 off 73 balls while Thompson made 43 of 28 balls and Desouza 18 in the valuable opening partnership.

After the great start by Roebuck, the Wanderers bowlers fought back determinedly and in an even performance shared the spoils with Mick Mickan taking 3-44, Ben Rahman 2-16, Dale Bin Sulaiman 2-32, Tyrone Garstone 1-21 and Wayne Edgar 1-34.

Not to be outdone, the Wanderers also got their innings off to great start in their run chase, with Daniel Oades and Ron Cox piling on 77 for the first wicket in 11 overs in a performance that shocked Roebuck.

The introduction of the spin duo of James Carpenter and Phil Thompson gave Roebuck hope as they finally claimed a couple of wickets and slowed the Wanderers onslaught. Although wickets continued to fall, it was finally left up to veterans Garstone and Gordon King to lead the Wanderers to victory in the 28th over.

In an even batting performance Oades top scored with 45 off 32 balls while Scott Gardiner made 30 off 28 balls, Cox 23, Garstone 20no and Dom Tracey 19.

For Roebuck Thompson took 2-26, Carpenter 2-42, Lynton Phillipson1-26 and Wevers 1-34.

Unicomb was named the Man of the Match.
