As whale activity starts to ramp up around Broome, the Department of Parks and Wildlife is reminding locals and visitors to be vigilant when coming into contact with the giants.

Humpback whales are on their annual migration from their feeding grounds in Antarctica to their warm breeding grounds on the north Kimberley coast.

According to Broome Whale Watching director Cameron Birch, the mammals have already made a splash, with plenty of sightings during whale watching tours over the past few weeks, including two mothers with their calves.

A DPaW spokeswoman said the migration was important for people to interact with the whales appropriately by observing the following whale watching rules:

·Only approach a whale on its flanks or to the side of the direction of travel - do not approach from behind or in front of the direction of travel.

·All boats, kayaks, sailboats must be 100m away from the whale.

·No more than three vessels should be within 300m of a whale.

·Drive carefully and keep an eye out - boat and prop injuries are common and visible on whales.

·If a whale surfaces in the vicinity of a vessel, take all care to avoid a collision. Put the boat into neutral and watch for the whale. When safe, move away from the whale at a speed of five knots or less.

·Swimming, feeding and touching whales is not permitted.

·Swimmers must try to keep a distance of at least 30m.

·Vessels should avoid repeated attempts to interact with whales if they show signs of disturbance.

·Signs of distress include diving for prolonged periods, swimming evasively, regular changes in direction, changes in breathing patterns and aggressive behaviour.

If you see an entangled or injured whale, contact the DPaW officer on 9195 5500.
