Women roar on the pitch

Women's cricket received a major boost last week with an international coach coming to Broome and women's fixtures being held last Saturday.

WA Cricket Association coach Esther De Lange, who also plays for the Netherlands, visited schools before holding a come-and-try session last Friday.

Broome Junior Cricket Association president Frances Archer said having someone of De Lange's stature to help promote the sport locally was significant.

"It was brilliant to be able to tap into her knowledge, skills and insight," she said.

"The kids really took to it and it is our ambition to start a T20 competition now for girls aged 10-15."

Meanwhile, Roebuck Primary School oval was transformed into a sea of pink on Saturday as female-only cricket matches were played to coincide with International Women's Day and Pink Stumps Day for the Glenn McGrath Foundation.

Broome Cricket Association president James Carpenter has drummed up interest in the event over recent weeks, with a fantastic turnout for training and the games.

The plan was initially to play one match, but due to the sheer amount of interest, two games were held.

"To have 45 women turn up to play cricket is a fantastic achievement and there is a commitment to continue growing women's cricket in Broome," Carpenter said.

"We raised over $500 on the day from a very generous crowd and local businesses have been great to support two excellent causes."
