A Broome pub boss has told of the horrific moment a staff member staggered into the bottle shop bleeding profusely with a severed artery after an alleged street stabbing.

Roebuck Bay Hotel general manager Mike Windle said the 32-year-old kitchen hand collapsed in front of his workmates about 7.20pm last night covered in blood.

“He made his way to the hotel seeking help,” Mr Windle said.

Staff immediately called an ambulance and police.

Mr Windle said a decision was taken to close to bottle shop at 7.30pm instead of the usual 10pm as paramedics worked for more than an hour to stabilise the man at the scene.

“It was very traumatic for staff to see a workmate like this,” Mr Windle said.

“Having said that, we tried our utmost to help ensure his safety and we did everything possible to allow the medicos and police to do their job.”

Police said the man was involved in an argument with a woman on Napier Terrace shortly before when he was allegedly stabbed across the wrist with a knife.

“A number of people at a nearby restaurant witnessed what had happened and a protected forensic area was declared.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Bradshaw said the man was later taken to Broome Hospital, and later underwent surgery.

“He was still bleeding and apparently he needed an operation to sew-up the artery. He was in a bad way.”

Det Sen Sgt Bradshaw said a woman has been charged with grievous bodily harm in relation to the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333000.
