Broome Police have been alerted to the discovery of what appears to be a 1941 hand grenade and spent ammunition which was found on a beach between the Port and Gantheume Point.

The items were located by a Broome family who were out walking with their children and dog on Tuesday, February 18.

Senior Sergeant Barwick of Broome Police said the family located ammunition casings in tidal pools and started collecting them - soon after they found what is now suspected to be a grenade.

"It is possible that recent heavy rain and rough weather conditions unearthed the items," Senior Sergeant Barwick said.

"The couple took the casings and object home and became suspicious of it and called police."

Photographs of the object were forwarded to Police Bomb Response and Military Ordnance Unit who identified it as possibly being a WWII Japanese hand grenade.

Military personnel provided advice to Broome Police on recovery of the object.

It was subsequently collected and packed in sand awaiting the arrival of a Military Ordnance Team in Broome.

The ordnance team are expected to arrive in Broome this Thursday or Friday to dispose of the object.
