A man has died and two others taken to hospital following an “extreme” house fire on the NSW Central Coast.

More than 30 firefighters were called to reports of the blaze in Mercator Pde at St Huberts Island about 5.40am on Tuesday.

“Upon arrival, firefighters found the property well alight and quickly got to work,” Fire and Rescue NSW stated.

“They were confronted by extreme fire activity, with the wind pushing the blaze throughout the home.

“It took firefighters just under two hours to extinguish the fire, which has also destroyed the home.”

NSW Police confirmed the body of a man believed to be in his 40s was found after the fire was extinguished.

He is yet to be formally identified.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Meanwhile, two people managed to escape the fire after being alerted by a working smoke alarm.

They were both taken to hospital for further treatment.

Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the house fire.

FRNSW stated the blaze is a timely reminder to the community to be extra vigilant about fire safety, especially during the winter months.

“During these cooler months, FRNSW is encouraging the community to ensure they have a working smoke alarm and a home escape plan,” FRNSW stated.

“Residents can book a free home fire safety visit which includes smoke alarm testing and where necessary, alarm provision and installation, free of charge.”
