Halfway through the 2024-25 Doug Hogue Medal count on Monday night, it was clear Zane Marwick would win.

When last-round votes were tallied, the 31-year-old Wanderers all-rounder had 28 votes with runner-up Ringo McKenna (Towns) on 19 and Clint Yeates (Sportsmans) 17.

The Hogue Medal is voted on by umpires who judge a player’s impact on a game rather than pure statistics. It is local cricket’s highest individual honour.

But Marwick’s statistics are amazing all the same. In qualifying rounds he batted in 14 of 16 games, amassing 654 runs with two centuries and five 50s.

He is often at his best in a crisis. In a match against Bluff Point he made an unbeaten 33 out of his team’s 71, and in another against Sportsmans he made an unbeaten 64 in an innings of 119.

His 28 wickets cost just 10.21 runs each with a best of 5-15 and he held 15 catches. He also won cricketer of the year, and trophies for the A-grade batting aggregate and average, and bowling aggregate.

“I’ve heard a lot about Doug and it’s an honour to be awarded his medal so thank you Suzanne,” Marwick said to Hogue’s widow Suzanne Hogue, who presented the medal at Towns Football Club.

“I’d also like to thank my wife Natalie and the Wanderers Cricket Club who’ve welcomed both of us with open arms.”

Marwick also won the WACA’s Barry Shepherd Medal for best player at country week and the Keeffe Medal as Geraldton’s best. His 185 runs at 46.25 and 14 wickets at 8.28 helped Geraldton win A-Section.

“To win country week was amazing, every one of our players had moments when they delivered typified by the support Darcy Ingle had from the lower order when we needed it,” he said.

Other major winners were Wanderers’ Olivia Bidwell with her second women’s cricketer of the year medal and she was also women’s country week best player. Dongara’s Mark Lucas was B-grade cricketer of the year.

The Chris D’Mello U21 Cricketer was Zak Williamson and the U19 Rose & Frank Shaw Cricketer was Jeremy Bedford. Layne Gillingham was Best U19 Woman.
