Young Hedland Teeball stars shine on State stage as local season approaches
Hedland Teeball Association coach Toni McMahon has praised the sportsmanship of local young guns who took to the diamond at the State Teeball Championships in Perth — setting the tone for a tee-rrific local season.
The under-13s team, a diverse group of players as young as nine, fearlessly stepped up to the plate against older competitors at the March long weekend championships.
“While we didn’t come away with the win, the kids gained some great skills, experience and memories,” McMahon said.
“We were so proud of how our team represented Port Hedland. There was some incredible hitting, double plays and some spectacular catches in the outfield.”
Also shining on the State stage were Teleah Charles, Ethan Hill and Levi Hill, who took part in the Little League State Championships, also held in Perth, from April 18-21.
“It was a great chance for them to develop their pitching and batting skills and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience,” McMahon said.
Teeing off on May 3, the Hedland season is anticipated to echo last year’s participation numbers, when more than 90 young people participated.
The 2025 season will have three divisions – juniors, intermediates, and seniors, with the playing age 6-12 for boys and 6-13 for girls.
Reflecting on last year’s success, McMahon highlighted a major achievement.
“In 2024, we sent three teams to North West Champs in Karratha, with our senior team remaining undefeated for the weekend, taking out the senior division,” she said.
Looking ahead, the 2025 North West Championships will head to Exmouth in September — a long-awaited return to hosting duties for the coastal town.
“It’s the first time in many years that Exmouth have hosted the championships, so we are very excited to attend. We will be taking three teams again,” McMahon said.
