‘Never going’: Punters call for boycott as MCG food and drink prices rise in latest victim to cost of living

Punters have lashed out over changes to food and drink prices at the MCG ahead of the annual Boxing Day cricket Test, with some calling for a boycott.

Drink prices will increase by as much as 60 cents, bringing up the price of a 425ml beer to $12 from $11.50, according to 7News.

A 560ml cup of Carlton Draught is set to rise from $14.50 to $15 in the members’ section, while the price of a bottle of water is also set to increase by 20 cents to $4.90.

Fish and chips will experience the steepest increase, up to $15.50 from $14.90.

However, the cost of hotdogs, jam doughnuts, meat pies, coffee and chips will remain the same.

MCC general manager of commercial operations and partnerships Tanya Gilling pointed to the cost of living.

“I think as we talk about the cost of living, we’re not immune to it at the ‘G, we want to subsidise it as much as we can,” Ms Gilling told 7News.

The price rises, set to come into effect from Wednesday, are just in time for the Boxing Day Test match between Australia and India.

Fans have taken to social media to express their frustration with the move.

“Absolute greed,” one person commented on Facebook.

“There goes me never going again,” another wrote.

“What has this country come to with this price gouging, JUST STOP BUYING,” added another.

Others went as far as to call for a boycott.

“Boycott it simple as that, bring your own food and drink and see what happens there,” one person commented.

“Simple don’t buy, and bring snacks from home,” another added.
