Broome Primary students to start Term 1 off-site

Students affected by damage to the historic Broome Primary School will attend classes off-site for the beginning of the new year.

A statement released by the Department of Education earlier today said arrangements had been made for pupils to begin Term 1 at either Cable Beach Primary or Roebuck Primary School while restoration works were finalised.

The first day of term is due to begin this Monday.

The school was torched by an alleged arsonist earlier this month, with four classrooms, an office and a storeroom completely destroyed, but the heritage-listed wing of the school was not impacted.

BPS principal Jared Lawson said despite the best efforts involved in the recovery works, it was not possible to open the classrooms for students on day one.

“People have been working incredibly hard around the clock, including across the long weekend, in an attempt to get our school up and running,” Mr Lawson said.

“Unfortunately, it’s just not possible for the school to be fully operational from Monday.”

Mr Lawson said he hoped students could return to BPS by the end of next week.

The statement said parents would be contacted by the school about their child’s education program, where they will be located and transport to the other schools.
