Bumper crowd on board for Bike Week
About 70 Broome cyclists enjoyed a sunrise bike ride on March 24 in celebration of Bike Week, which ran from March 16-March 25.
After successfully obtaining a grant from the Department of Transport and WestCycle, Broome Tri Club hosted a community bike ride from Cable Beach to Kimberley Cycles, followed by a Bike Week breakfast.
Broome’s community bike ride and breakfast was one of 64 events that ran during Bike Week celebrations.
Riders got to choose between two rides — one on local roads geared towards novices on hybrids and road bikes and another on bike paths and footpaths that suited all skill levels and all bikes.
Broome Tri Club president Mark Smith said Bike Week was all about encouraging people to get on their bikes, whether that was to ride to work or school, as a means of transport around town, or for recreation. “The emphasis is on getting people on their bikes to benefit from the incidental exercise that riding around town provides,” he said.
Broome Tri Club members were impressed with the large turnout, saying it was the biggest crowd they had had in four years of running Bike Week events in Broome.
For more than 30 years, Bike Week has been celebrating cycling across WA, with events running in the metropolitan and regional areas of the State.
Past Bike Week events across the State have included two-wheeled treasure hunts, Ride2School Day, workshops, bike breakfasts and pedal-powered film screenings.
