City ready to supply KBRC with water to ensure 2025 season proceeds, but agreement is yet to be reached

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has been in a position to supply crucial water to the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club for weeks, but an agreement between the parties is still yet to be reached two months out from the 2025 season’s start. Responding to questions from the Kalgoorlie Miner on Thursday, Kalgoorlie-Boulder mayor Glenn Wilson said the city had been positioned to supply recycled water to the club to help ensure the iconic Race Round and other races could proceed, since before Christmas. “However negotiations between the KBRC, Racing and Wagering WA and the city continue and we look forward to a positive outcome in the near future,” he said. In a statement to members released on Thursday, KBRC chief executive Ian Dunstan said stakeholders remained in discussions over a potential solution to the water shortage which is plaguing this year’s race season. “I understand the frustration and uncertainty this situation has caused, especially given we are now less than two months away from the start of our season,” the statement read. “The KBRC and Racing WA met with the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder on Tuesday morning. “The meeting was productive, however, an outcome is yet to be reached. “Discussions are ongoing between the relevant parties and we are hopeful for a definitive outcome in the coming week or so, with our priority to ensure a sustainable solution is achieved.” Member for Kalgoorlie Ali Kent on Thursday said she was continuing to work with the city, KBRC and relevant State ministers to find a solution because the Kalgoorlie race season was “extremely important”. The water crisis comes after it was revealed at a council meeting last year the city’s recycled water supply capability only met Lynas Rare Earths’ agreed-upon total quota for its processing facility — 1.7GL a year — throwing recycled water provisions for the KBRC and other areas in doubt.
