Club boots home an AFL winner

Broome’s famous racing season may be over, but the turf club is not locking the gates just yet, with a big day planned for arguably the nation’s grandest sporting event.

Locals and visitors will be able to watch the AFL grand final on the Broome Turf Club big screen for the first time.

BTC manager Paul Rossiter said the grand final was a chance for the club to host something other than racing at the venue.

“We want to make more use of the club on days that we are not racing and the AFL grand final presented such an opportunity,” he said.

“We would like to add this to our annual calendar, along with a couple of new events we will also be looking to soon.”

The match will be streamed directly onto the club’s 9m-wide screen, believed to be the biggest screen showing AFL in the Kimberley. Full bar and tote facilities will be available, while children can also get in on the action with face painting and a bouncy castle.

Mr Rossiter said it would give Broome the opportunity to enjoy the game in a family-friendly setting.

“There will be plenty of room for the kids to run around, while watching the game in a really exciting environment,” he said.

“It is important for new and fun things to be popping up around town.

“We encourage everyone to wear their team colours, bring honkers, streamers and whatever they want and create a fun environment on the day.”

The AFL grand final will be streamed live from 12.30pm Broome time this Saturday.

It will take take place at the MCG between the West Coast Eagles and Collingwood and broadcast on Channel 7.
