A renowned golfer and manager has won an inaugural nationwide award for his services to Broome Golf Club.

William Minns was recently awarded the 2016 PGA Manager of the Year award at the WA Professional Golfers Association of Australia’s annual meeting in Perth, after 11 years of management experience.

During this time, Mr Minns has facilitated the development of Broome’s golf course to see 19 new greens constructed and fairways improved, as well as managed Broome Golf Club, ensuring it remains affordable and accessible for all locals and tourists.

Mr Minns said he was humbled by the award.

“Being the first year of the award for PGA members, it’s a great thrill to be first chosen,” he said.

“To be recognised by your peers is nice.”

Mr Minns hopes the award will have long-term benefits for the golfing club and the state of golf in Broome, not just for himself.

“I’m hoping that as we look into the future with plans for a new clubhouse, it may give funding bodies a little more faith in what we can achieve here,” he said.

“We have a course now that many interstate and overseas visitors are amazed by. A new clubhouse facility would be a jewel in the crown, not only for golfers but the whole community and tourists alike.”
