Shining light on Anzac tale
A Western Australian Anzac story will be making its way to Broome this May to commemorate the final year of the Centenary of Anzac.
Perth-based Black Swan State Theatre Company has announced it will be touring the State with their production The Lighthouse Girl in April and May after enjoying sell-out seasons in Albany and Perth last year.
Broome will be the final stop of the upcoming regional tour, with the performance scheduled to be staged at the Broome Civic Centre on May 5.
The regional tour is part of the commemorations for the Centenary of Anzac — 2014-2018 — marking 100 years since Australia’s involvement in World War 1.
Black Swan State Theatre said the tour will be an “incredible opportunity for regional audiences to engage in the production and to share in a sense of pride in seeing a local story on stage.”
The Lighthouse Girl tells the story of Faye Howe, the daughter of a lighthouse keeper who transcribed Morse code messages from soldiers stationed off shore, becoming their last hope of getting word to their loved ones before heading off to war.
She develops a friendship with a young soldier, Charlie, who enlists in the Light Horse Brigade with the hope of seeing the world.
Directed by Stuart Halusz,The Lighthouse Girl was adapted by WA writer Hellie Turner, from the novels Lighthouse Girl and Light Horse Boy by Albany author Dianne Wolfer.
