The $3 million refurbishment of Shell petrol station on the corner of Napier Terrace and Frederick Street in Broome should be complete within weeks.

Shell Australia said it expected the site to reopen in December, with state-of-the-art bowsers with card paying facilities and a new 24/7 convenience store, run by supermarket giant Coles.

The old building has virtually been rebuilt after more than two decades and the upgrade includes additional underground petrol and diesel storage tanks as backups in the event of cyclone-flooding and road closures.

"In terms of what we doing it is basically a rebuilding of the entire site," Shell spokesman Paul Zennaro said.

"We are reconfiguring the entire convenience shop and remodelling the forecourt, where people drive in and fill up, which will reduce waiting times for customers in peak periods.

"We are also putting in additional diesel and unleaded storage tanks underground that will enable us to keep supply going during the peak tourist season, when we have found there have been shortages in the past."

The additional forecourt features include high-flow diesel pumps that allow fuel to be pumped into tanks at a rapid rate.

"This would be really good for vehicles with large diesel tanks that traditionally take a long time to fill using conventional pumps," Mr Zennaro said.

"We are also resurfacing the driveway and landscaping around the building."

Mr Zennaro said the newest Shell signage would also be used.

"We have been in the Broome community a long, long time and this is something we are really proud of," he said.

"We think the new site will be a great asset to the community."
