A Broome post office employee will appear in court for allegedly stealing and tampering with mail.

Australia Post worker Lena Ivanoff, 35, has been charged with stealing as servant after detectives searched her home and allegedly seized “numerous items of interest”.

Acting Inspector Kevin Bradshaw said police launched an investigation in April this year after Australia Post identified anomalies within the mail system.

“As a consequence they contacted their security people, who contacted us,” he said

He said police were currently checking letters and parcels to trace the owners and that other charges could follow.

“We are satisfied the alleged thefts are isolated to the Broome region only but I would like to take this opportunity to remind people not to send money in the mail,” Acting Inspector Bradshaw said.

“At this stage, we have had about 60 people that have reported missing their mail.”

Ms Ivanoff has been granted bail to appear in Broome Magistrate’s Court later this month.

Acting Inspector Bradshaw said the postal system was crucially important to the public and he encouraged people and Australia Post staff to report missing post and anything suspicious.
