A 22-year-old Broome Regional Prison escapee has been charged with burglary and several other offences after spending about 35 minutes on the run yesterday.

The Department of Corrective Services said medium security remand prisoner Joseph Benedict May escaped from the jail at 5.20pm yesterday and was recaptured by police at about 5.55pm.

Broome police Sergeant Paul World said the inmate was caught following a foot chase by officers and a police dog.

Sgt World said the man was charged with burglary and several other offences before being returned to prison from Broome Hospital later last night.
