Broome sport stars win praise

The Broome Sports Awards were held last Friday night, with the top performers and representatives of sport in the town recognised.

The event at Broome Civic Centre attracted more than 150 attendees from the sporting community, with Paralympics world champion swimmer Priya Cooper guest speaker.

The prestigious Sport Star of the Year award was shared between masters athlete Vicki Cobby and ATI Martial Arts' Tristan Johnston.

Broome Soccer Association's Tim Gray won the Volunteer of the Year award, while Ardiyooloon Basketball Association was crowned with the remote community accolade.

Joe Handscombe was named the Rising Sports Star of the Year for the second time, while Pearl Coast Gymnastics picked up the club sport award.

Tash Aristei was the winner of the Coach of the Year award for her role with Broome netball, while Ric Buist picked up the service to sport award.

Jo Dann of Cable Beach Football Club was given a special recognition award and the Broome Cricket Association received an outstanding achievement award.
