Broome’s new Shire president chosen
Ron “Sos” Johnston has been elected president of the Shire of Broome after a ballot between councillors at a special council meeting tonight.
Chris Mitchell, who was elected on the “Let’s Get Broome Moving” ticket on Saturday alongside Cr Johnston and three others, nominated himself with Desiree Male nominating Cr Johnston.
Cr Johnston won the ballot 6-3.
Councillor Harold Tracey was elected unopposed as Deputy Shire President.
Justice of the Peace and Freeman of the Shire of Broome, Kim Male, swore in Councillors Elsta Foy, Chris Mitchell, Mala Croft, Warren Fryer, Bruce Rudeforth Jnr and Ron Johnston following their election on Saturday.
Councillors Philip Matsumoto, Harold Tracey and Desiree Male continue on the council.
