Brown pipped for title
Broome's Kodee Brown came within a whisker of retaining his Australian Super Sedan Speedway title over the weekend, but was pipped by Queensland's Matt Pascoe to finish second at the national event in Tasmania.
The Broome-born driver won the equivalent race last year and has been in preparations over the past month to repeat the impressive feat at the Australian Super Sedan titles, which took place at the Bendigo Bank Arena in Latrobe.
Brown took part in a number of races in Queensland last month, and spent the last three weeks with his family and pit crew in Tasmania, having had a good lead-up to the event with two third-place finishes in both the Super Sedan Grand National and the Super Sedan Grand Prix.
With 32 competitors nominated for the Australian title, the Kimberley driver had his work cut out for him.
With four heat races over Friday and Saturday, Brown held his own to finish with two wins, a second and a fifth.
This meant he started in third place for the 40-lap final - a good omen as it was the same position he qualified from in last year's national final.
In a well-contested race, all top drivers found themselves vying for a position on the podium.
Although Pascoe led the race from start to finish, Brown fought hard to come within 0.75 secs of the lead with just four laps to go, with momentum on his side.
Unfortunately, after a car colliding with the wall there was a stoppage, which robbed the Broome driver of the chance to retain his title.
Brown is set to continue competing in the National Super Sedan Series, which runs until the beginning of April, with his next race in Parramatta at the end of February.
The Broome driver is still WA's No.1 and will contest the State title on April 18 and 19 at Mount Barker Speedway.
Broome Speedway Club president Sherele Brown said the driver was a credit to the sport in the region.
"There is a fair bit of luck involved in speedway and to finish such a major event is always a feat," she said.
"Kodee and his crew were over the moon with the finish, albeit second place.
"His achievements put Broome and WA speedway on the map and he has done us all proud."
