Collision at corner hot spot is cause for driver concern

Police are appealing to motorists to slow down and take more care following another serious intersection collison in a built-up 50 km/h zone in Broome.

No one was injured in the latest two-vehicle incident on the corner of Walcott and Louis streets last week, in which a Toyota Hilux utility ended up on its side.

The cause is under investigation.

It follows a fatal crash at the intersection of Hamersley and Hass streets in July, when a taxi and a Toyota Prado collided.

The man driving the four-wheel-drive has been charged with dangerous driving causing death.

Police allege he failed to give way and collided with the taxi, killing the 19-year-old passenger.

In May, two vehicles overturned in separate accidents at the intersection of Carnarvon and Frederick streets.

Kimberley police Superintendent Mick Sutherland drove a campaign with the Shire of Broome to fix the collision hot spot, which is 30m from his office on Hamersley Street.

The council's portable electronic sign was placed there within days, warning motorists to take care. Weeks later, part of the intersection has been redesigned with kerbing installed for safer approaches and more distinct road markings.

Supt Sutherland said his wife almost had a serious accident at the same location earlier this year.

He said he constantly followed up the matter with the council and the regional Road Wise committee.

"Statistics of recent crashes provided support of urgent action that police believed needed to be taken," Supt Sutherland said.

"Many near misses at the Frederick and Carnarvon street intersection were witnessed by police travelling to and from the station."

He said it was time for motorists to "take more care, concentrate, and stick to the 50 km/h speed limit".
