The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley paid tribute to outstanding residents and local businesses when it hosted two major community events last month.

The Derby Community Expo drew more than 200 people through its doors who were invited to visit 44 stallholders showcasing their services.

Highlights included an ambulance tour with Derby Hospital staff, mini-train rides with Derby Volunteer Marine Rescue Service, learning how to cast a line with Mary Island Fishing Club and learning how to putt with Derby Golf Club.

Meanwhile, former Olympic swimmer Lisa Curry was welcomed as a guest speaker at this year's Thank a Volunteer Day.

Ms Curry was hosted by the Shire as part of her One Life, One Chance Australian road trip.

Ms Curry delivered a motivational talk about the impact of volunteers.

She also conducted a swim clinic and met Derby District High School Girls Academy students to talk about the importance of good nutrition, health and exercise.

Before leaving the Kimberley, Ms Curry stopped in Fitzroy Crossing to give a motivational talk at Fitzroy Valley High School, host a swim clinic and attend an afternoon tea which involved meeting and engaging with local parents.
