Court appearance for man accused of cop assault

A 20-year-old man has appeared in court after a police officer was seriously injured when a bottle was thrown through the window of his patrol car.

Bernard Anthony Roe, 20, appeared in Broome Magistrate’s Court last week charged with assaulting a public officer and criminal damage.

The incident occurred during a major disturbance on Anne Street about 4am on September 26.

The violence prompted police to introduce emergency liquor restrictions that day.

The court was told the officer received serious injuries including permanent scarring on the side of his face and nerve damage which required surgery. He also received damage to his right eye.

Magistrate Stephen Sharratt agreed to the defence’s request to allow Mr Roe to reside with a relative at One Arm Point, with varying bail conditions including prohibiting him from consuming alcohol and entering the Broome town site unless it was for urgent medical attention.

Mr Roe will appear in the Dampier Peninsula Magistrate’s Court on October 22.
